Why Come What You Wanted: 10 of the most failed remakes in movie history

Rather read about movies and TV series that definitely didn’t need a remake. All because their creators simply didn’t get it right, like Brad Silberling who decided to remake “Bewitched” in 2018

Every year, there are more and more movies and TV series being remade. Someone just wants to address the classics, someone may lack ideas, and someone wants to give their favorite pictures a “second life”. Of course, there are extremely successful projects that become even more popular than the original. And there are those that simply should not have been released. In this material, I will share with you the worst remakes from different countries and different years. If someone suggests you watch one of them together, I suggest you think twice

Enchanted

As soon as the first trailer for the Charmed reboot came out, audiences immediately began to be outraged. And no wonder, because the creator of the project took the old setting, the same names, stories and further down the list, and after… just replaced the actresses. Nothing original in such a remake was not, which disappointed fans of the good old sci-fi project.

On this occasion, the actress from the original project in 1998 – Holly Mary Combs, who played Piper Halliwell, also had time to speak out. The girl directly stated that she was not pleased with even the very idea of restarting the series about witches. And the only salvation for him would be the move of the producers, who would allow the original cast of actresses to rewrite the script for the remake. Then this series might not have gotten such a flood of hate.

Gossip Girl

“Gossip Girl” 2010 came to like even Deadpool, as he admitted in the last movie. But the remake, which was not intended to be a remake originally, did not stand up to the criticism of angry fans of the original project. In the pilot episode of the new project, the plot went by leaps and bounds, but after that everything slowed down sharply, so that the audience began to yawn from boredom. Heroes turned out to be too cliched, and jealous teachers, who turned out to be the mysterious “gossip girl”, generally spoiled the whole plot of the project.

Ghostbusters

The fate of the movie “Ghostbusters”, which was released in 2016, can be called unenviable. The first promo teaser received such a large number of dislikes that it became quite clear: the movie simply will not survive and will not win the love of the audience. Fans of the original project most of all scolded the decision of the director and producers to replace men with women in favor of the current agenda. In fact, only the charming Chris Hemsworth managed to soften the situation a little. If not for him, no one would have watched the movie at all.

The Lion King

The animated film “The Lion King” in 1994 became a cult and favorite for a huge number of viewers around the world, but its remake in 2019 was considered a terrible decision and a creative failure. The audience waited and hoped that the picture would succeed in awakening a sense of nostalgia for childhood, but this did not happen. Yes, the plot is exactly the same, the music of Hans Zimmer and Elton John is in place, but in the cartoon… there is no soul. There is only technological progress, which allowed so authentically draw animals that “The Lion King” became more like a documentary for the channel Animal Planet.

The facial expressions of the characters were simply absent, which, of course, seriously spoiled the impression of the movie. For example, in those cartoons, where the actors hang sensors on the actors to accurately reproduce all the facial movements look much better. But here Disney just decided not to bother.

Knock on my door in Moscow

No offense, but still to the Turkish original “Knock on my door in Moscow” is too far. Yes, the series has its own fans who fiercely defend it, but most still tend to the fact that the story turned out dry, it was no zest, and in the love of Sergei and Sasha, played by Nikita Volkov and Liana Griba, just do not believe. Some are harboring hope that the second season will be able to correct the situation, but so far there is not the slightest confidence in such a development. And in the Network, “Knock on my door in Moscow” was quite often called not a remake, but a poor-quality parody of the Turkish original with Hande Erchel and Kerem Bursin.

Conan the Barbarian

It would seem that Jason Momoa was literally made for the role of Conan. However, the movie still failed to surpass the original or at least just get on the same level with it. That picture, which decided to retake, was released in 1982 and remembered for the fact that the main role went to Arnold Schwarzenegger. His hero-warrior grew up in slavery and swore to avenge the death of his parents.

In the 2011 movie, the plot does not change. And this became the main mistake of its creators. What was simply fantastic in 1982, in 2011 it already seemed boring and uninteresting story, on which it is a pity to waste time. Therefore, it is not surprising that the film did not pay off: the box office receipts were half of the amount spent on the project.

How I Met Your Mother

You’d be surprised, but in Russia they tried to make a remake of the cult TV series How I Met Your Mother. And, of course, the idea failed miserably. First of all, it happened because the creators simply did not want to adapt a foreign script to the realities of our country. As a result, copied word for word dialogues and scenes looked ridiculous and even surreal. And if you watched the original, then, turning on the first episode, you will literally feel that you are watching a poor-quality parody.

A houseful of daughters

Russian series “Daddy’s Daughters”, which was released in 2007, in 2010 bought a German film company. They liked the plot of the story, and they wanted to repeat the success of the project in their country. But it didn’t happen. Maybe it’s the mentality of the German viewer, and maybe all to blame for errors in the selection of cast. After all, many complained that the actress who played the German “Masha” was too old for the role and behaved vulgarly, and “Dasha” from the version just wore black, but did not show that refers to himself to the Goths and was too nice. In the end, the series, which is still airing in Russia, had to be shut down in Germany.

Psycho

Taking a swing at Alfred Hitchcock’s work is already a mistake. Director Gus Van Sant decided to be inspired by the work of his colleague and shoot his version of the thriller “Psycho”. But the audience did not appreciate his “impulse”. So quite deservedly the picture received the award “Golden Raspberry” in the categories “Worst Director” and “Worst Remake”. And all to blame for the addition of strange and disgusting scenes, which were not in the original, and unreliable acting. As the saying goes, about this movie you can say, “Why did you come, what did you want…?”

The Mummy

And to complete our selection I want to remake the famous series of adventure films “The Mummy” with Brendan Fraser in the title role, which managed to become a real classic. That movie, which was released in 2017, turned out to be as unsuccessful as possible. And yes, it could not be saved even by Tom Cruise, who got the main role.

The audience seemed to even like the movie, but critics did not appreciate the attempt to recreate an entire universe in one picture. All because in “The Mummy” 2017 there were so many unclosed plot arches and some tie-ins to future installments that it was possible to get confused. In the end, poor Tom Cruise even won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor.
