Which anime characters have become the most popular in history? Whose name comes to mind before the others – Luffy, Eren or Sailor Moon? These characters are recognized by every fan of titles even from afar.
Anime began to be released in the early XX century, and since then there have been so many titles that even with all the desire to revisit all of them will be extremely difficult (for “Van Pis” with “Naruto” will take only a couple of months). Of course, people who are more or less knowledgeable can already switch between the old-school stuff you need to know and the ongoings everyone’s talking about. But which of the entire range has garnered the most love?
This can partly be judged by the most famous characters, who have made many viewers faithfully not quit watching even through big broadcast breaks and a bunch of fillers. Which characters have become, you might say, the “faces of anime” around the world? Watch and discuss
Spike Spiegel from the anime Cowboy Bebop
Fantastic action movie of the late 90’s knocked up at the very peak of the love of the audience for everything cosmic, and especially all penetrated the image of the bully-hunter Spike Spiegel. And although it is believed that the popularity of this anime is much higher in Western countries than in Japan itself, many people found the character much more multifaceted than it may seem at first glance. The fearless hero also lost, experienced and repented, which was then not so often.
Eren Yeager from the anime Attack of the Titans
“Attack of the Titans” gave us a lot of colorful characters, as well as a handful of glass, but that’s why the tittle responded to those who are tired of inevitable happy endings and predictable finales. Special thanks for this should go to Eren Yeager (and the author, of course), who showed how one man’s decisions can change the fates of thousands of people and all of humanity. To rally people against themselves and become the embodiment of evil is not an easy mission and a fate doomed to suffering, but the hero sacrificed himself and others for the sake of peace. For how long? Question.
Ichigo Kurosaki from the anime Bleach
Parallel to the “King of Shamans” to see spirits and send them to the other world became Ichigo from “Blich”. Red-haired young man with a beautiful character and the soul of a warrior quickly won the love of the audience, and after the release of the recent movie “Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War” his popularity went up again. Unlike many other shōnen characters, though Ichigo changes over time, he remains true to himself and his principles without going through a life-changing transformation. He is a resilient young man to admire.
Saitama from the anime “Wanpanchmen.”
Many have seen this bald superhero, even if they’ve never watched any anime at all. Absolute iconic character with incredible strength and enviable optimism although some people and seems a little monotonous, but to deny his influence and recognizability throughout the world is unlikely to be possible. Well, his humor is also very much appreciated 🫶 🫶 I can’t deny his influence and recognition around the world.
Satoru Gojo from the anime Magic Battle
Usually the central character of an anime is the most popular, but Gojo just stole the hearts of the audience with his story, his incredible blond/blue-eyed combo, and his game-changing power. You could say he became a hero of a new generation, who became a social media favorite on par with Kakashi. A tough past and a character that allows you to overcome everything and more? These are exactly the characteristics that cling to viewers the most.
Izuku Midoriya from the anime My Hero Academia
If in the 90’s and 00’s most people were hooked on the cold, aloof and outwardly callous characters, then in the mid 10’s empathic, kind and a little bit even awkward characters began to gain popularity. Izuku became an instant favorite, though you certainly can’t call him weak either. A new image that true winners don’t necessarily need to look intimidating, bully the squishy, and hide true emotions.
Tanjiro Kamado from the anime “The Blade that Splits Demons”
Another similar example of a new generation hero who overcomes difficulties with both a smile and tears, and does not refuse the help of friends. Amusingly, according to a Benesse poll, Japanese children admire Tanjiro more than their own parents. His difficult fate and determination to achieve his goal, no matter what, conquer even the youngest. Plus, the dynamics and colorful drawing, which brought the tittle to the tops, also play a significant role.
Anya Forger from the anime Spy Family
Girls in this selection are few, and absolutely lightning new face of the soft family anime became charismatic Anya Forger. The title didn’t start airing until 2022, but since its release, the girl’s image has flown all over the country in a variety of marketing campaigns. Of course, anime are also known for their dark uplifting stories, but no one has stopped loving cuteness either. And how can you live without her waka-waka?
Usagi Tsukino from the Sailor Moon Warrior Beauty anime
Inevitably and undeniably the first place among female heroes is occupied by Sailor Moon. The character appeared in the early 90’s and became iconic not only nationally, but worldwide. The franchise has received several titles, movies, musicals, computer games and a lot of merch that even many people never dreamed of. Who hasn’t dreamed of taking the place of one of the Sailors? Legends that came before the Wizards and the Winx.
Naruto Uzumaki from the anime “Naruto.”
Conan Edogawa from the anime “Detective Conan”
The adventures of an adult trapped in the body of a child continue from 1996 to the present day, showing the fascinating investigations of the little genius and his search for a cure to regain his former appearance. Surprising to viewers was the fact that throughout the impressive broadcast period, no one sees the end of the story… Although baby Conan can be admired forever.
Naruto Uzumaki from the anime Naruto
Who hasn’t heard of Naruto? Probably, such people are few, because he is not for nothing considered one of the most recognizable heroes in the world. The guy went through all the canons of shonen in the early 00s: a difficult childhood, fortitude, big dreams, loyal friends, formidable enemies and, most importantly, development. A maximally inspiring tittle many can call a favorite, and it’s not hard to guess why. While some were throwing snowballs as kids, young shinobi were exchanging rasengan.
Luffy Monkey D. from the anime Wan-Pis
Next on the list are also legends, so hardly even need an argument why these characters are known and respected by millions. Pirate Luffy has been wandering in search of that very treasure since 1999, and has continued the journey with his friends until now. Viewers love the hero’s unbridled interest in the world around him, as well as his faith in people, goodness and the impossible. Let’s be honest, the real knights and princesses these days watch exactly “Van Pees”!
Pikachu from the Pokemon anime
Role models can be not only humans, but also incredible magical creatures! Everyone in the world has seen a yellow mouse or squirrel (according to the author) that shoots sparkling lightning bolts and says, “Pika-pika-chu!”. Together with Satoshi, his face became a symbol of anime in general in many countries and introduced foreign viewers to a foreign genre, as it was quickly adapted into English.
Totoro from the anime My Neighbor Totoro
The work of Hayao Miyazaki can be called a separate genre of anime – atmospheric, measured, philosophical and cozy. The movie was released in 1988 and became a classic, which is watched even by those who seemingly do not like anime. The character Totoro won a separate love and is considered the most popular symbol. And all thanks to the cuteness and kindness, of which Miyazaki never forgets to remind in his works.
Goku’s dream from the Dragonball anime
Many people know that the character Son Goku first appeared back in the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. His name varies from culture to culture, and Japan was inspired by him, creating the main character of the anime Dragonball. The anime was first released in 1986, so very many mangaka were originally inspired by this particular shōnen in order to create already legends of their own. Like Naruto, Goku grew up literally not only in front of the audience’s eyes, but also with them.
